CYF Conference Service Project

Can you imagine working for $0.31 an hour? Can you envision buying approximately 678 pounds of food with this money? Can you picture boxes of mixed vegetables, weighing almost a ton? Can you see laundry detergent, bathroom articles and other necessities in life in huge boxes? What can 51 young people and their counselors do as a Service Project at CYF Conference?

The youth and counselors took two afternoons during CYF Conference to provide service and assistance for GAP Ministries located in Augusta, Georgia. These brave souls ventured to Golden Harvest Food Bank, the distribution center for food banks in Georgia, to help provide additional moneys for this ministry. Each person working earned 31 cents a hour, which GAP Ministries can use to buy food and other personal items. GAP can buy two pounds of food for this amount!

The camp was divided into small groups for the week and it was decided that this is how the youth would go to help this valuable ministry. Three groups went on the first day and the other two on the next. The first day found the youth encountering large boxes of frozen mixed vegetables. They were asked to bag the vegetables in 5-pound bags and then place 6 bags to a box for distribution to the food banks. It was heard said after the bagging, "I didn’t like mixed vegetables when we started this venture, and now I really don’t like them!" The second day, the youth sorted laundry detergent, fabric softener, bathroom article, and other items donated by various Grocery Chains. Most of the items on this day had to be wiped off due to leaking and then sorted according to item and use. Another person was heard to say. "I now have the softest hands in camp!"

The young people at this conference came away with a newfound sense of pride. It doesn’t take much to help someone less fortunate that you. In response to their continued need to serve others, we pray that this will become a vital part of the camp and conference experience.
