Disciples Men Meet at Christmount

The
Rev. Michael Mooty, Senior Minister of Central Christian Church,
Lexington, Kentucky and a former Moderator of the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ), was the keynote speaker at the Disciples Mens
retreat. He addressed the theme of the retreat, "Rebuild and
Rejuvenate Mens Ministry." Joe Kern, regional Mens president
presided at the retreat. Gerald Demarest, Minister at Guyton Christian
Church, led vespers services. Charles Maddox, Layman of the year in 1999,
gave the devotion on Friday night. Milton Summerall, coordinator for
Disciples Mens ministries in Georgia, assisted with the business
session and video taping of the retreat events. The
2000 Layman of the year was announced at the retreat former Georgia
moderator, Eddie Parker. Parker is currently interim minister of Victory
Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky. In the business meeting, new
officers were elected. They are Medie Still, President, Charles Maddox,
President-Elect, Joe Kern, Past President, John Anderson, Secretary, and
Gerald Demarest, Pastor/Counselor.
Rev. Mooty addressed the changes in culture and the
challenges to the church of the 21st century. He encouraged the
men to center on God as the critical issue for faith. He said that there
is an emptiness in our culture that only God can fill. He added that we
need to live theologically live a faith that shapes the way we live.
At the business meeting, the men voted to use the Sunday
offering to support its giving to Basic Mission Finance and to assist
Guyton Christian Church with an upcoming mission trip. Fifty-one men plus
several ladies attended this years retreat. The next Disciples Mens
retreat will be March 9-11, 2002, at Christmount.
