Atlanta’s Sandra Barnhill is One of 18 Recognized for Outstanding
Leadership in U.S. Communities
The Ford Foundation announced the 2004 winners of the
Leadership for a Changing World awards on October 11. Sandra Barnhill,
Executive Director/CEO of Aid to Children of Imprisoned Mothers in
Atlanta was one of 18 awardees chosen. Ms. Barnhill is the immediate
past moderator of the Christian Church in Georgia and currently the
chair of
the Reconciliation Taskforce for our region.
The awardees, chosen by a national selection committee
from a pool of nearly 1,000 nominations, are individuals and leadership
teams tackling some of the nation’s most entrenched social, economic and
environmental challenges.
“These awardees are making a difference in communities
across the country and are showing us new ways to exercise leadership in
challenging times,” said Susan V. Berresford, President of the Ford
Foundation. “The LCW program not only recognizes their accomplishments
but also seeks to explore what constitutes effective leadership today
and to share those insights more broadly.”
“I’m proud to be recognized on the national level for
the work I do for Georgia families,” said Ms. Barnhill. “Over 17 years
AIM has helped more than 10,000 children, safeguarding their futures and
our communities. I hope that this award focuses more attention on this
critical issue.”
Ms. Barnhill founded AIM in 1987 to address the needs
of children with mothers in prison – who are five times more likely to
go to prison themselves. AIM provides programs and services to help the
children achieve academically and socially, and maintain healthy
relationships with their mothers during important years in their
development. But Ms. Barnhill’s influence and leadership stretch beyond
AIM. Throughout the years, she has supported others to create nonprofits
to deal with a variety of community issues.
Each awardee will receive $100,000 to advance their
work and an additional $15,000 for supporting activities over the next
two years. The winners will also participate in a multi-year
collaborative research initiative exploring how leadership is created
and sustained. A full list of the Leadership for a Changing World award
