Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your unfailing love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation.
--Psalm 85:6-7

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.
--Psalm 51:10-13

A mysterious, magical stranger pops into town, saves the day and rides off into the sunset, leaving the town a better place and people who will never forget. It’s the plot to High Plains Drifter, The Music Man, Mary Poppins, Edward Scissorhands, and every episode ever shown of The Lone Ranger and Cisco Kid. The prototype is Jesus, who appears in history from an unexpected place, travels from town to town preaching and healing, and returns to glory after a brief ministry that changed the world forever.

It’s also the plot of the usual church revival: The evangelist pops into town, stirs up the church, lures weeping sinners to the altar, celebrates with a potluck dinner and slips away, leaving the staid-and-steady pastor to fan the flames and take the blame when the smoke clears and the embers die.

We’re going to try a different approach. We aren’t hiring a guest speaker; instead, we’re inviting the community to hear the “new” pastor. We have a few guest musicians, but they’re only here to support established and newly-discovered worship leaders already attending at Guyton Christian Church.

We’re having an “Old Time Gospel Sing Revival.” It’s a revival of music, a revival of tradition, and most importantly, a revival of the love and joy we all remember from the hour we first believed. It’s a celebration of the blessings God has poured out on Guyton Christian Church. It’s our gift to the community – we aren’t taking a collection or throwing a membership drive. We won’t be calling anyone into church membership, but we’ll be calling everybody to a renewed faith in Christ and reliance on the Holy Spirit.

It kicks off on Thursday, February 28, at 6:30 p.m. That first night, My brother, Tommy, will lead worship and my father, Ray, will bring the music specials. The rest of us can relax and get ready to welcome friends old and new to praise and worship.

On Friday, Choir Director Sue Exley will lead will lead worship, featuring the choir and our beloved soloists. We’re proud of our many talented keyboardists, including Ginny Cleary, Judy Zittrouer, and Molly Moore. (Bryan Thompson and Miles Deen will be featured on other occasions.)

On Saturday, Bill Exley will lead worship with a Southern Gospel flair, recruiting his many musical friends from this and other congregations. Through our Sunday night Guyton Gospel Jam, Bill has introduced a number of musicians to our church. We are eager to see what God has in store for this special evening. And if you haven’t heard Rockin’ Randall Cowart on piano, you don’t want to miss this great night of music!

Our praise and worship team, including Bryan and Shannon Thompson and Lamar Hall, will provide special worship Sunday morning at 9:30 and specials at the 11 a.m. service. On Sunday night, we’ll wrap it up in the Christian Center with a special edition of the Guyton Gospel Jam starting at 6 p.m.

We plan to offer light snacks before each service, child care during the service and prayer and counselling after each service. We will need “all hands on deck” to make this event a success. And, yes, I’ll be bringing the message each night. We hope to have church members promoting our outreach ministries. The many ministers in our church (Medie Still, Archie & Lanie Jenkins, and others) will provide invocations, blessings, benedictions, and prayers.

“Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ephesians 5:19-20) That is our assignment, and it starts right now! We aren’t saving this up, and we aren’t waiting for that special four-day event. Revival is happening NOW! We’re just getting ready to share it with all of Guyton and Effingham County.

Nancy and I have found revival here, and we know that many of you have as well. If you haven’t attended in a while, please use this event to renew old friendships. Give us an opportunity to show the love of God that we have found in Jesus Christ.

Please be in prayer for our Old Time Gospel Sing Revival. Get ready to celebrate!  Nothing is more important than your prayers and encouragement. May God continue to richly bless your ministries at Guyton Christian Church.
