Rev. Terri Hord Owens Heading

Rev. Terri Hord OwensRev. Terri Hord Owens is a native of Terre Haute, Indiana and a descendant of one of Indiana’s oldest African-American free settlements. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Government with a minor in Afro-American Studies from Harvard University.

Terri began her career in the area of information technology, spending 23 years in the area of management consulting, data management and data warehousing.

Hord Owens’ resume includes more than 20 years in corporate America leading diverse teams in data management before she entered seminary. Despite professional success, she felt God had another assignment, and she accepted her call to ministry under the pastorate of Dr. T. Garrott Benjamin, Jr. at Light of the World Christian Church, Indianapolis, IN.

Rev. Owens earned her Master of Divinity at the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she was a Disciples Divinity House Scholar, and recipient of the John Gray Rhind Award, given to the top M.Div graduate at the Divinity School. She was ordained at Light of the World Christian Church, wearing the robe of her paternal grandfather, the late Rev. Noel Hord.

For the last 15 years, she has been the Dean of Students at the University of Chicago Divinity School, , where she was responsible for administration and development of academic policy, student advising on personal matters, students’ academic progress, admissions and financial aid, recruiting, and PhD student professionalization and placement.

She is a founding member of the Advisory Board for the Center for the Study of Black Faith and Life at Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago. She was also active at the regional and national level of the Christian Church, in the area of intellectual interests including a theology of reconciliation, cultural intelligence, developing inclusive and multicultural congregations, and the mentoring of youth and young adults.

On July 9, 2017, Rev. Teresa “Terri” Hord Owens was elected as the new General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. She is the first African-American to hold this post and the second woman to lead the denomination.

She is married to Walter Owens, Jr., with whom she has celebrated 30 years of marriage. They are the proud parents of an adult son, W. Mitchell Owens, III.

Callaway Gardens

Little White House in Warm Springs
Visitors can tour Former President FD Roosevelt’s home, which has been preserved very much as he left it, the servants and guest quarters, and the nearby pools complex that first brought the future president to Warm Springs. Selected as a “Readers’ Choice” site in Georgia Magazine four years in a row.

Providence Canyon State Park
Visitors can enjoy views of the canyons from the rim trail, taking care to stay behind fences and off the fragile canyon edge.  Hikers who explore the deepest canyons will usually find a thin layer of water along the trail, indication of the water table below. Backpackers can stay overnight along the backcountry trail which highlights portions of the canyon and winds through mixed forest.
