Loving. Giving. Johns Creek Missions.
Johns
Creek Christian Church was blessed to send 13 youth and adults to Miami,
Florida on July 5-12 for their annual summer mission trip. Our group
worked with an organization called Touching Miami With Love (www.touchingmiamiwithlove.org)
and was involved in ministry with the homeless and children and families
in the Overtown area of urban Miami. Overtown is a historic
African-American community that has faced many challenges over the years
– poverty being one of them.
We
started our week in the community early Sunday morning by serving
breakfast, helping prepare lunch, and leading worship for the Downtown
Mission ministry with the homeless, which is a partnership between TML
and Christ Fellowship. On Monday through Friday, the group worked with
TML to lead day camp for 60 children in the Overtown community.
Throughout the school year, TML works with these children in a program
called ToMorrows Leaders After School Program. By providing leadership
for Bible study, crafts, recreation, and music, we helped to develop
relationships and plant seeds of God’s love with children from PreK
through 5th grade.
Following
day camp on Tuesday, the group worked to help beautify a part of
Overtown and on Wednesday evening we grilled hamburgers and hot dogs and
fellowshipped with members of the community at a free cookout provided
by TML. The cookout is aimed at building relationships and opening doors
for continued ministry with the community.
Some members of our group went to Miami last year, and they were so
excited to return this year. We had a wonderful experience, and our
group worked very hard with no complaints. We were blessed to be
reminded of the love that God has to offer for all people, and we were
challenged to be faithful to give so that this love can be shared with
all the world. |
