"What does it mean to pray
for our troops"?
A workbook and program in the Christian Practice and Discipline of
Prayer:
This workbook of essential background
essays has been prepared by Roger Sizemore, Pastor at First Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ), Savannah in cooperation with the Elders of
the congregation. The vexing dilemma in addressing current world
problems like war and peacemaking demands that we do our homework,
studying the balanced perspectives of the experts in the
biblical and public policy fields and not merely rely on the popular
notions of the "talk show host" ideologues. No one has the right
to tell another "how to think" (or vote.). But all of us must
operate from sound Christian and biblical assumptions in creating a
meaningful conversation about our lived-out responsibilities in the
public sphere.
The Christian Practice and Discipline
of Prayer program involves wearing a
yellow ribbon and "live Strong" - (Lance Armstrong) - type bracelet with
the name of a particular soldier on the inside as a reminder, and to
agree to pray and work at finding biblically faithful alternatives to
war and violence in our culture today, to send words of encouragement to
your soldier and written responses about your prayer life. The soldier,
if permitted, will have a similar bracelet worn as a tangible reminder
that you are praying for him or her. Reading the background essays to
be informed is essential, on such topics as Fundamentalism, (Islamic and
Christian), Apocalyptic texts, deep democracy, missional church, who is
an Evangelical, and the essays are from such authors as Cornell West,
Jim Wallis, Martin Marty, Kenneth Pollack, Stanley Hauerwas, and
numerous, recognized biblical scholars.
